What is the Music program?

As a discipline, music has an emotional resonance unlike any other artistic expression. The musical sounds made by the voice and various instruments have had centuries of influence on human experience and are reflected universally in cultures all over the world. As an individual act or in an ensemble, the study and performance of music provides opportunity for students to develop both creativity and mastery.

What will I learn?

The music program provides students the opportunity to explore classical and popular musical forms and to understand their historical/cultural origins. For majors, students will develop skills with music theory, notation, aural skills, and applied skills that are the foundations of performance, and will develop knowledge, experience, and confidence in live performances. Private lessons are available on all standard orchestral instruments, plus piano, organ, saxophone, guitar, and electric bass; and ensembles include concert choir, guitar ensemble, chamber ensemble, brass ensemble, jazz ensemble, chamber singers, percussion ensemble, and SAC’s award-winning mariachi ensemble.

What can I do with this course of study?

The music program is designed to prepare students for study in a bachelor's degree in the following areas: performance, music education, music industry, music marketing, music therapy, composition, theory, and musicology. Students take courses in music theory, music literature, applied instruction in voice or instrument, and ensemble participation.

What is special about this program?

The facilities of the music program include several piano labs, practice rooms, rehearsal spaces, and specialized instruction from faculty who are widely known, with regular performances both regionally and nationally. Also, the program features regular performances at the college, using the 1,004-seat McAllister Fine Arts Auditorium as its primary venue.
