Bexar County Voters Approve Historic $987 Million Bond for Alamo Colleges District
May 5, 2025
Largest bond in district’s history will fund new facilities, expanded programs, and infrastructure improvements to meet rising workforce and educational needs
In a historic decision, Bexar County voters approved the Alamo Colleges District’s $987 million bond proposition during the May 3, 2025, Joint General, Special, and Bond Election. With nearly 70% of voter approval, this measure marks the passage of the largest bond in the Alamo Colleges District history and a major investment in the future of higher education, workforce training, and economic growth across Bexar County.
The bond will fund facilities’ construction, renovation, and expansion to meet the region’s rising educational and workforce needs. Projects include the development of new academic and workforce centers and upgrades across the district’s five colleges.
“This is a transformative moment not just for the Alamo Colleges District but for the future of Bexar County and our region,” said Dr. Mike Flores, Alamo Colleges District Chancellor. “The Alamo Colleges are grateful for the trust voters have placed in us. Their support for this bond is an investment in our students, stronger families, and a more prosperous future for Bexar County. We remain committed to our moonshot of partnering to end poverty through education and training.”
The $987 million bond will provide:
- $535 million of infrastructure support for new programs and expanded facilities, including new centers for advanced manufacturing, automotive technology, and construction trades.
- $247 million for critical infrastructure and technology improvements to modernize learning environments.
- $205 million for investments in high-demand sectors such as healthcare, engineering, cybersecurity, information technology, and emerging technologies.
New locations funded through the bond will include a School of Emerging Technologies at Port San Antonio and a Center of Applied Technology and an Automotive (T-TEN Program) and Heavy Machinery Program at Brooks – two rapidly growing hubs of innovation and industry. Also included is a School of Nursing And Health Professions located in the South Texas Medical Center.
“For decades, Alamo Colleges has been a steadfast partner of the Port and played a central role in developing the talent of generations of workers who today are on the front lines of global industries that continue to thrive on our campus,” said Port San Antonio President and CEO Jim Perschbach. “The new upcoming facilities will be an important expansion that further prepares and connects people from across our community with exciting career pathways being created by our customers and other leading employers in our region—top names in aerospace, cybersecurity and an array of other advanced technologies.”
“At Brooks, we recognize that manufacturing is one of the fastest growing and most impactful sectors in our region’s economy,” said Leo Gomez, President & CEO of Brooks. “The passage of the Alamo Colleges District bond program will bring cutting-edge training facilities to our campus, directly connecting the Brooks region to opportunities for high-wage, high-demand careers. This investment strengthens our talent pipeline, attracts innovative employers, and ensures that the South Side continues to lead in shaping the future of manufacturing in San Antonio.”
The San Antonio area population is projected to grow by more than 29% by 2040, reaching nearly 2.5 million residents. A Citizen’s Bond Advisory Committee guided the planning behind the bond, made up of community and business leaders who helped shape the district’s priorities based on growth trends, workforce demand, and student success.
“Thanks to the incredible support of our community, we will be able to expand opportunities for thousands more students in the years to come,” added Flores. “This is our community’s bond, and we are committed to delivering on the promise that voters entrusted us.”
